Getting ready for back to school with Livingston Educational Service Agency Posted: August 31, 2012 Updated: August 31, 2012

The community is getting ready for back to school! The 11th annual Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA) Backpacks for Kids event was held last Thursday. Over a thousand people, including hundreds of children, lined up hours in advance buzzing with excitement to receive backpacks filled with supplies.

LESA collected almost 1,300 backpacks filled with supplies in preparation for the event. The backpacks were organized based on children’s age and gender. It only took a few hours to distribute backpacks to all the children in line, totaling 814! The extra backpacks will go to local school districts to be provided to students throughout the year.

The event included the 2nd annual Connect for Kids which is a small resource fair for the families of children receiving the backpacks. OLHSA, along with several other local organizations were on site to offer goods and services to students, everything from helmets to fresh produce.

Erin Tiano of OLHSA was there with her family to help and share in the excitement. While Erin helped spread the word of OLHSA services at the Connect for Kids event, her boys helped vendors stuff bags and pass out water to those standing in line on the hot summer afternoon. Great work Tiano family!
