OLHSA Clients Get Ahead: Developing Awareness and Moving Forward Posted: March 04, 2016 Updated: March 10, 2016

On February 1st OLHSA celebrated three motivated clients who are taking control of their futures. These participants’ completed a 16-week, 20-session course based on the book “Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-by-World”. The book and course are written for individuals in poverty and provides them with direction for examining the impact of the challenges they are facing and manifesting opportunities for a more successful life.

The course, held in the evenings, provided a learning environment where participants reflected on their lives, assessed their resources and investigated new information. OLHSA employees and course facilitators, Deana Smith and Laura Wesley, guided the process and participants, as they explored, examined and processed information. Participants reflected on and analyzed themes in their lives, considered their resources, made decisions, built their future stories, created concrete plans for stability and enjoyed the power that comes from solving problems in their lives.

Through the program, individuals gain life skills and come to see opportunities that are available to them. Developing time management and budgeting skills were course highlights for one student. Another student said she became aware of what it takes to move forward and get out of poverty. This student also displayed a deep gratitude for the childcare and food resources provided while she attended class.
